Introduction:

Stellantis and CATL have today confirmed an agreement to invest up to €4.1 billion to create a joint venture for the construction of a large-scale European lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery plant in Zaragoza, Spain.

Features:

The plant is expected to have a capacity of up to 50 GWh, depending on the development of the electrical market in Europe and continued support from both Spanish and European Union authorities.

The 50-50 partnership between CATL and Stellantis will strengthen Stellantis’ leading LFP offerings in Europe, allowing the company to provide more high-quality, durable, and affordable battery-electric vehicles, including passenger cars, crossovers, and SUVs in the B and C segments, with intermediate ranges.

This significant collaboration with CATL will bring cutting-edge battery production to a facility already recognised for its leadership in clean and renewable energy, advancing a comprehensive sustainable approach. We extend our gratitude to all stakeholders who have contributed to making today’s announcement possible, including the Spanish authorities for their ongoing support.

Production is set to begin by the end of 2026 at Stellantis' Zaragoza site in Spain.
