Introduction:

LG Energy Solution and Toyota Tsusho Corporation have formed Green Metals Battery Innovations, LLC, a new partnership focused on battery recycling. As part of this initiative, the companies plan to invest in a pre-processing plant in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Features:

The upcoming plant will carry out pre-processing tasks such as dismantling and shredding battery manufacturing scrap to recover black mass—a material rich in essential metals like nickel, cobalt, and lithium.

The aim is to process up to 13,500 tonnes of scrap annually, which is roughly equal to more than 40,000 electric vehicle batteries.

This partnership supports the creation of a battery-to-battery closed-loop system, allowing recovered materials to be reused in new battery production. This approach is designed to promote sustainability and build a circular economy within the battery industry.

The facility is expected to begin operations in 2026.
