Introduction:
Electric vehicle manufacturer GreenPower Motor Company has announced an agreement with the New Mexico Economic Development Department (EDD) to set up operations in Santa Teresa, New Mexico.
Features:
The new 135,000 sq. ft. plant in Santa Teresa will serve as GreenPower’s base for North American operations and its US corporate headquarters. The project is expected to generate more than $200 million in economic impact for the state over the next 10 years and create over 340 jobs.
Under the agreement, GreenPower will receive a $5 million LEDA award from the state, along with $4.6 million in Job Training Incentive Program (JTIP) funding. The company has also qualified for a $1.36 million Rural Jobs Tax Credit (RJTC) and $3.65 million through New Mexico’s High-Wage Jobs Tax Credit programme.
Santa Teresa’s Foreign Trade Zone designation played a key role in the investment decision, offering simplified customs procedures and cost-efficient trade benefits. These advantages support streamlined production and distribution of zero-emission vehicles across North America. The designation also enables access to the North American Development Bank, highlighting the project’s cross-border economic and environmental significance.
In addition, GreenPower has partnered with the EDD to launch the state’s first all-electric, zero-emission school bus pilot programme at two public schools in Las Vegas and a charter school in Santa Fe. The ongoing two-year pilot supports New Mexico’s Energy Transition Act, which aims to achieve a 100% zero-carbon electricity supply by 2045.
