ZF OPENMATICS and Maxion Wheels partner on a wheel connectivity solution

11 September 2019

Maxion Wheels, the world's largest wheel manufacturer, today announced its collaboration with ZF OPENMATICS to develop a fully integrated wheel connectivity solution, the first of its kind sector. Originally intended for the commercial vehicle market, the multiservice sensor will collect, analyze and disseminate key data such as tire pressure and temperature, wheel load and other measurements indicating wheel and tire performance. drivers, fleet managers and infrastructure authorities.

"With the unique load cell attached to the wheel, tire and wheel information collected and communicated via the Wheel Smart Connectivity Solution will enable a variety of novel safety, usability and performance analyzes. profitability, "said Pieter Klinkers, president and CEO of Maxion Wheels. "By partnering with ZF OPENMATICS, we are combining our leadership in the wheel business with their expertise in intelligent sensing and telematics to deliver an integrated mechanical and sensor solution that will not only prevent the final failures of potentially dangerous and expensive tires and wheels, but will also provide drivers and fleet managers with basic data on vehicle performance, they need to optimize their business. "

"ZF has many years of experience with wireless communication, type BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy). We are now complementing this expertise with Maxion to create the world's first battery-powered, fully-integrated TAG wheel sensor, which adds important features beyond simply monitoring tire pressure. The benefits of real-time tire monitoring solutions are extended to the life of the tire and its optimum performance. This is another step towards improving road safety, driving comfort and profitability, "said Thomas Rösch, Managing Director of ZF OPENMATICS.

The Intelligent Wheel Connectivity Solution combines Maxion Wheels 'MaxSmart® wheel sensor technology with ZF OPENMATICS' integrated TAG sensor platform. Mounted directly on the rim of each wheel of the vehicle, the resistant and Bluetooth tags measure humidity, tire temperature, pressure, and vehicle load, as well as the position, speed and vibration of the wheel on nine axes. The information is collected in real time and transmitted wirelessly to the onboard telematics unit of the vehicle before being transferred to the ZF Cloud. Data can be read and analyzed via a PC or smart devices, or sent to a third-party system according to the customer's choice. By fully integrating each different data sensor into a single, easy-to-use TAG, ZF and Maxion offer unmatched and truly 360 ° monitoring capabilities.

This fully integrated system can be installed on almost all types of commercial vehicles, and even on agricultural machinery. It provides unique information at a glance, improving road safety and reducing costs. This makes it particularly valuable not only for fleet operators, but also for mobility providers using autonomous driving solutions.

The new partnership will present its first prototype at the IAA 2019 car show, and intends to complete its feasibility studies in the first half of 2020, before proceeding with testing and validation in real-life situations.
