Xpeng opens new production site for intelligent electric vehicles

10 June 2020

Xpeng Motors, a leading electric vehicle and technology company, today offers an exclusive insight into its self-constructed plant in Zhaoqing, Guangdong Province.

The Zhaoqing Xpeng Motors Intelligent Industrial Park, the cradle of the Xpeng P7 super-long-distance sports sedan, was built over a 15-month period and is fully owned by Xpeng Motors. On May 19, 2020, the plant received the official production license from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

"We are deeply proud of our performance as a young company in building our own intelligent manufacturing facility in Zhaoqing," said He Xiaopeng, chairman and CEO at Xpeng Motors.

“Xpeng is now the only young intelligent electric vehicle manufacturer in China to operate both its own factories and contracts. We firmly believe that manufacturing creates the basis for intelligent cars. Only a manufacturer that builds solid drive trains and vehicle chassis can differentiate itself through data operation, autonomous driving and connectivity software, ”he adds.

“This not only gives us an optimal insight into our production process, but also demonstrates our skills in successfully managing the supply chain and realizing extensive projects. This means an optimal basis for future developments in the field of intelligent vehicle design and manufacture. ”

Five state-of-the-art workshops for manufacturing areas such as stamping, welding, painting, final assembly and the production of battery packs will be housed on a planned area of 2 million square meters.

The factory is managed by a 600-strong professional team. 74 percent of the engineers have more than 5 years of professional experience, 78 percent previously worked for leading OEMs.

Punching hall

The punching hall is 100 percent automated. Steel plates are punched and formed on the 6,600-ton, CNC-controlled automatic stamping production line, which delivers up to 12 pieces per minute, which is above the industry average of 10 percent, with a precision of only 0.1 millimeter.

Thanks to real-time monitoring of the processing parameters and the provision of an industry-leading information system, the manufacturing process is very open and transparent and ensures high quality consistency.

Welding hall

The welding shop in Zhaoqing is equipped with 210 ABB industrial robots that meticulously carry out several processes such as gluing, welding and riveting aluminum plates. Tier 1 and Tier 2 final assemblies achieve a degree of automation of 100 percent and offer the possibility of manufacturing steel-aluminum hybrid vehicle bodies.

The factory's self-adaptive medium-frequency welding machine achieves energy savings of 30 percent, while the trend-setting visual adhesive system achieves an adhesive accuracy of up to 0.5 millimeters.

Paint shop

Attractive design requires extraordinary painting techniques. The thin film pretreatment and cathode electrophoresis technology of the Zhaoqing factory allows a significant reduction in wastewater discharge. The slag produced is reduced by 94 percent, reducing energy consumption by around 25 percent and zeroing the emission of heavy metal pollutants.

A sophisticated BASF high-performance coating material with B1B2 + 2K waterborne double-layer coating technology is used in the paint shop, which significantly improves the paint quality and at the same time protects the environment.

Assembly hall

Thanks to an automatic material supply and distribution system, AGV technology, automatic gluing and assembly techniques, all components are efficiently and carefully assembled in the Zhaoqing factory.

All important torque connections of the CBUs (Complete Built Up) are tested online using a powerful digital production system, which guarantees 100% quality control of all important torque connections in the body.

Battery pack production hall

The battery pack production hall has a flexible AGV production line that combines high-precision visual systems and robots to perform intelligent operations. The intelligent test system at the end station performs comprehensive tests for each battery pack, including 198 offline tests and 89 battery performance tests to check the insulation, SOC performance and BMS function. This ensures that each battery pack meets the requirements of the industry-leading IP68 protection class.

The Xpeng P7 will go through 18 rigorous quality control procedures. Each vehicle will also go through over 1,700 dynamic and static tests, as well as 18 simulated road condition tests for control, braking, comfort, sealing and abnormal noise to ensure high quality standards.
