Toshiba launches compact packaged automotive photorelay with blocking voltage of 900V compatible with in-vehicle 400V battery systems

24 October 2024

Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation has developed the TLX9150M, an automotive photorelay that uses a compact SO12L-T package and achieves a blocking voltage of 900V (min.) compatible with 400V automotive battery equipment . Shipments begin today.

In recent years, electric vehicles (EVs) have been adopting higher capacity and voltage batteries to improve driving range and charging time. Battery management systems (BMS) constantly monitor and control the battery to maximize its lifespan and performance, and also monitor the insulation between the battery and the vehicle body to ensure safety. Electrically isolated photorelays are used in BMSs that handle high voltages.

Generally, photorelays used in battery systems are required to withstand a voltage approximately twice the system voltage, so in the case of a 400V system, a blocking voltage of 800V or more is required. The new product achieves a blocking voltage of 900V, making it suitable for 400V systems.
In addition, the package used is the newly developed SO12L-T, which is approximately 25% smaller [Note 2] than our existing SO16L- T. This makes it possible to miniaturize the battery unit, contributing to cost reduction. The pin pitch and pin arrangement are the same as the SO16L-T, allowing for common board pattern design.
