Thales and Cubic jointly launch the next generation of eSIM solutions for connected vehicles

1 April 2025

Thales , a global leader in advanced technologies, and Cubic , a global leader in software-defined vehicle (SDV) solutions, will collaborate to drive innovation and simplify connectivity management. Leveraging Thales' eSIM management platform , Cubic will enhance its eSIM solution capabilities to align with the latest GSMA standards and ensure seamless global connectivity in industries such as automotive, transportation, and agriculture.

With the introduction of the GSMA SGP.32 standard for the Internet of Things, the stakes are high for the sector. This standard establishes several key technical and business requirements for eSIM management in the Internet of Things, including enhanced security, interoperability between devices and network operators, and scalability for large-scale deployments. This new framework is critical for the widespread deployment of eSIM technology across a wide range of devices and addresses the need for intelligent and seamless connectivity management.

This partnership will introduce Thales' eSIM management platform— compliant with the GSMA SGP.32 standard —into Cubic's existing multi-network, global connectivity management ecosystem. This innovation will enable continued mass deployment of eSIMs across the more than 200 countries where Cubic operates, while simplifying connectivity management across multiple devices by remotely automating subscription activation and updates. This drastically reduces the need for manual intervention, physical SIM swaps, or device recalls.

Cubic's customers, including Volkswagen, Cariad, General Motors, SEAT, IVECO, and CNH, could benefit from enhanced solutions like this to ensure that managing vehicle connectivity becomes effortless. Vehicles equipped with Cubic's solution, which now integrates the Thales platform, can automatically connect to local networks when crossing borders, eliminating complex development or additional costs. This ensures a seamless global experience for automakers and their customers, as cars can be preconfigured with connectivity profiles at the factory and dynamically activated upon delivery.

"Thales has been a trusted partner of Cubic since 2017," said Nick Power, CTO at Cubic . "For OEMs, adopting GSMA M2M eSIM has been anything but easy. Technical complexity, vendor lock-in, and managing multi-MNO connectivity on a global scale have slowed adoption. Transitioning to a leaner, more efficient GSMA eSIM IoT architecture will be critical. This collaboration underscores our commitment to standardization, interoperability, and innovation to ensure Cubic customers can benefit from a more flexible, cost-effective, and future-proof approach to global connectivity."

"With this upgrade, Cubic aims to remain at the forefront of IoT connectivity by addressing evolving market needs. Integrating Thales' On-Demand Subscription Manager platform will enable Cubic to maximize end-to-end connectivity management for OEMs, ensuring devices are seamlessly connected from the factory floor to the point of use," said Eva Rudin, VP of Mobile Connectivity Solutions at Thales . "This collaboration underscores our commitment to standardization, interoperability, and innovation in the Internet of Things space."

GSMA SGP.32 contains the technical specifications for remote eSIM management of Internet of Things (IoT) and other types of mobile device deployments.
