Synopsys and SiMa.ai Announce Strategic Collaboration to Accelerate Development of Edge AI Solutions in the Automotive Industry

18 December 2024

Synopsys and SiMa.ai today announced a strategic collaboration to jointly offer a new solution to automotive companies to accelerate the development of software and solid-state devices for specific workloads needed for AI-enabled capabilities in next-generation vehicles. The solution will combine Synopsys’ advanced automotive electronics design automation (EDA) IP-cores, hardware-assisted verification techniques with the industry-leading SiMa.ai machine learning accelerator (MLA) IP-core, and a comprehensive ML software stack application development environment for highly customizable IP-cores, subsystems, small form factor modules (chiplets), and SoCs.

Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and in-vehicle entertainment (IVI) are emerging as key differentiators for automotive manufacturers, offering extraordinary application diversity. The advent of generative artificial intelligence (AIGen) capabilities in these applications requires AI at the edge to deliver real-time, multimodal experiences in the vehicle. But current software-defined vehicle (SDV) architectures cannot address the demands of application diversity and provide the compute, performance and reliability required. To compete in this new environment, automotive manufacturers need both power-efficient, workload-tested and AI-ready software architectures, and hardware-software co-design solutions, from individual solid-state devices to systems, to reduce development costs and time-to-production risks.

Synopsys is a trusted partner to the automotive ecosystem worldwide – over 50 original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier 1 suppliers have adopted Synopsys virtual prototyping technologies – and has developed more than 1,000 virtual models from SoC IP-cores to ASICs and board-level ICs. The SiMa.ai technology stack emphasizes flexibility – supporting the largest possible number of models, sensors and applications and automatically optimizing them for ultra-high performance. The integrated solution from Synopsys and SiMa.ai will be designed to enable these benefits:

Early Architecture Exploration: To guide automotive engineers on how to best target performance, power consumption, and software application requirements for custom or third-party SoC development. Early Software Development: The solution will be optimized for IAGen and multimodal functions as well as providing a complete workflow, including emulation and virtual prototyping, to accelerate software/hardware integration and reduce time to market.

Differentiated and cost-effective in-vehicle experiences: Proven solid-state subsystems and building blocks for high-performance automotive ML chiplets and SoCs, fully customized to support a variety of workloads, integrating SiMa.ai's leading-edge, easy-to-use tools and software.
Continuously update your automotive AI solutions at the edge: Develop applications with AI capabilities to support current and future requirements. Use virtual prototypes and verify updates over the air.

“Our collaboration with SiMa.ai will enable automotive manufacturers to make significant progress in modernizing their hardware/software co-design processes to meet the demands of advanced in-vehicle experiences that are increasingly expensive and complex to develop,” said Ravi Subramanian, Group Director, Markets and Product Management at Synopsys. “Our leadership in architecture exploration, IP-core development, and hardware-assisted verification, combined with SiMa.ai’s power-optimized ML capabilities and breakthrough results, will enable customers to differentiate themselves while continuing to meet stringent cost considerations and industry standards.”

“The close collaboration with Synopsys enables us to offer automotive OEMs complete and optimized solutions that accelerate their development cycles,” adds Krishna Rangasayee, Founder and CEO of SiMa.ai. “The SiMa.ai MLSoC platform is designed to achieve the best possible performance with minimal power consumption across a diverse set of applications – this was the missing piece to make cars much safer and smarter than today. Combining our know-how with Synopsys’ cutting-edge software and IP-cores will provide automotive OEMs with a rock-solid foundation to realize innovative in-vehicle experiences and autonomous driving.” Synopsys and SiMa.ai will be exhibiting at CES 2025, January 7-10, 2025; to learn more about how we are collaborating to transform the development of AI solutions at the automotive edge, contact [email protected] to schedule a meeting at the event.
