SWTCH Energy partners with Bectrol to deploy electric vehicle charging stations across Quebec

24 January 2023

SWTCH Energy , a provider of electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions for multi-unit buildings in North America, today announced its partnership with Bectrol, a Quebec-based charging station integrator EV charging station and supplier of industrial automation, distribution and control panel manufacturing.
This announcement marks SWTCH's first major partnership in Quebec and helps increase the number of EV charging infrastructure for tenants of multi-unit residential buildings (MURBs) and commercial buildings in the province.

SWTCH's open charging platform and energy management solution are already interoperable with Hydro-Quebec's Electric Circuit, which is present in Quebec and elsewhere. This interoperability makes SWTCH a refill provider of choice for regional installers, such as Bectrol.

“SWTCH is honored to partner with Bectrol, a leader in EV charging installation projects in Quebec,” said Carter Li, CEO and Co-Founder of SWTCH Energy. “Bectrol has become a regional leader as an EV charging station integrator, and we are excited to expand our solution and team for charging station deployment across Quebec together. »

Currently, 46% of all EVs registered in Canada are located in Quebec. A longtime pioneer of electrification, Quebec pledged in 2020 to ban the sale of all new gas-powered vehicles in the province after 2035, several months before Canada commits to the same goal in nationwide, and has the ambitious goal of having 1.5 million electric vehicles on the road by 2030. These electrification plans, however, require strong charging infrastructure that will be available through this new partnership.

“We decided to partner with SWTCH, a Canadian company, because their energy management solution is efficient, reliable and economical,” said Jean Nicolas Dupéré, co-strategic director at Bectrol. “SWTCH technology is fully customizable and easy to install, without limiting users to a single hardware manufacturer or specific charging network. We look forward to electrifying Quebec together, while sharing our relationships with manufacturers and electrical contractors. »

Although Quebec currently has no provincial regulations to make MURBs EV-ready, the city of Laval already requires new MURBs to provide electrical structures for EV charging. Other cities are expected to follow suit in the months and years to come, which makes this announcement particularly compelling.

The partnership between Bectrol and SWTCH comes on the heels of SWTCH's 2022 roaming agreement with the Electric Circuit, the largest public EV charging network in Quebec. Consequently, SWTCH and Electric Circuit account holders have the opportunity to charge on either network, giving SWTCH drivers access to 3,800 additional charging stations, including 600 fast charging. In return, Electric Circuit electric motorists had access to 2,750 additional charging stations in multi-tenant properties in North America.
