Polyplastics opts for PBT and PPS grades in sensors for autonomous driving applications

19 January 2021

The growing trend toward electric vehicles is prompting material suppliers like Polyplastics Co., Ltd., a leading global supplier of engineering plastics, to position their innovative resin products For use in parts of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) that make autonomous driving possible. Materials such as the company's PBT DURANEX (R) and PPS DURAFIDE (R), designed for sensors in camera and radar support systems, hold great promise as they offer low deformation, dimensional stability, and low dielectric constant.

In radar housings, manufacturers look for materials with low dielectric constant, stable radio wave transmissibility, and low water absorption. The market has been using syndiotactic polystyrene (SPS) and polyetherimide (PEI) for their dielectric properties, and PPS for its low water absorption and chemical resistance. To address cost challenges, manufacturers have begun incorporating PBT into their designs.

Polyplastics states that water absorption has little effect on PPS 1140A6 DURAFIDE (R), but some impact on PBT 330HR DURANEX (R). Consequently, the company is working on the development of new PBT grades with improved low dielectric constant and low water absorption properties.

For the support of the radar itself, electromagnetic wave shielding properties are needed to protect against unnecessary reflected waves. All Polyplastics electrical conductivity grades, POM CH-10 and EB-10 DURACON (R), and PBT 7300E DURANEX (R), are being actively considered while developing new PBT grades with stronger electromagnetic wave shielding properties.

For automotive mounted sensing camera mounts, high stiffness and low strain materials such as PBT 733LD and 7407 DURANEX (R) are generally preferred. The company has also developed matte technology that uses a laser treatment to reduce interference (light scattering). Laser treatment generates favorable brightness and darkness levels. Polyplastics will continue to explore long-term durability and the different process conditions required to reduce treatment time.
