Performance Ready: 2023 Toyota Prius Prime Introduced

19 November 2022

When the plug-in Prius concept model was first unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2009, few could have anticipated the significant role it would play in the future of mobility The model offered customers a versatile solution with its all-electric or hybrid modes, impeccable MPG performance and all the technology people have come to expect from a Prius, making it a perfect addition to the third-generation Prius lineup. Today, the automaker is ushering in a new era of the Prius legacy, with the unveiling of the 2023 Prius Prime  at the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show. Now in its 10th year of production, this plug-in hybrid model has continued to give customers the flexibility to drive with zero-emission battery power or hybrid mode for fuel-efficient highway travel. . And now, this plug-in vehicle offers an exciting experience in its own right, bringing even more performance and technology to an already incredible package. It features a larger lithium-ion battery that increases its range by more than 50% over the previous 25-mile range. With more than 20 million plug-in hybrid and electric hybrid vehicles sold worldwide, the new Prius Prime brings a flexible model to Toyota's growing electric vehicle team.

As part of Toyota's diverse approach to carbon neutrality, Prius Prime is part of the lineup that seeks to go "beyond zero." With ten hybrid vehicles, two plug-in hybrids, the new bZ4X battery electric vehicle, and Mirai zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell technology, Toyota is committed to finding highly efficient, zero-emission solutions that fit lifestyles. of customers in the United States. As a symbol of that commitment, the 2023 Prius will be the first Toyota vehicle to wear a new "Beyond Zero" badge, a global effort to achieve carbon neutrality in products, manufacturing and beyond.

The price and on-sale date of the exciting new Prius Prime will be announced in the first half of 2023.

Sporty with attention to efficiency

One approach to the Prius Prime is to allow it to have a similar spirit to the new Prius hybrid model but with a little extra: better performance, technology, safety and even a bit of attitude. Overall, the goal is to build a vehicle that not only meets the practical needs of today's customers, but also one that appeals to their emotions, and that starts with a new sport-level lineup.

Available in SE, XSE and XSE Premium trims, the 2023 Prius Prime is built on the second-generation TNGA-C platform and offers a low center of gravity with reduced weight and increased rigidity compared to the previous generation. The result? It offers a wider layout and lower riding position that feels sporty yet comfortable.

The new Prius Prime also pairs its athletic looks with a bit of star-driven tech: a sunroof. This on-board charging feature uses roof-mounted solar panels to recharge Prius Prime's battery when parked. The panels provide supplemental power to accessory functions such as air conditioning while driving and also use a clever design that hides the electrodes for a clean, shiny appearance.

Compared to the previous-generation Prius Prime, it's two inches shorter, one inch wider, one inch longer, and with a hip point that's nearly an inch lower. The location of the traction battery has also been optimized, now located under the rear seat for a low center of gravity and increased luggage capacity.

Performance Ready

When it comes to performance, the Prius Prime is built specifically for that purpose, with a plug-in hybrid system designed to improve fuel economy and driving performance over the outgoing model. Acceleration feel and vehicle speed control are also improved, providing a driving feel and throttle response unique to electric vehicles.

Under the hood is the 5th generation hybrid powertrain along with a 2.0L engine and a newly developed lithium-ion battery, located under the rear seat. The result is a more than 50% increase in zero-emissions electric range, an increase of nearly 100 hp to 220 hp and a 0-60 acceleration time of 6.6 seconds.

The Advanced Parking system is available on the XSE Premium trim, a hands-free system designed to assist with parallel parking or reversing into a parking space.

Security

For 2023, Prius Prime comes standard with the latest generation of Toyota Safety Sense, TSS 3.0. This suite of active safety systems includes the existing feature set available on the previous generation Prius Prime, but incorporates some additional enhancements and capabilities.

This set of security features includes:

  • Pre-collision system with pedestrian detection
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Dynamic Radar Full Range Cruise Control (DRCC)
  • lane detection assist
  • traffic sign assistance
  • Automatic high beams
  • proactive driving assistance

Another new addition to Prius Prime's safety features is Proactive Driving Assist. When the system operating conditions are met, using the vehicle's camera and radar, this system provides smooth cornering braking or smooth braking and/or steering to assist in driving tasks such as monitoring the distance between a vehicle ahead, a pedestrian or a cyclist. Proactive Driving Assistance is not intended to be a substitute for the Pre-Collision System and works in different circumstances.

Toyota Safety Sense system features from the previous generation Prius Prime have been enhanced for TSS 3.0:

  • The Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection has improved detection capabilities thanks to new sensors in the system. It incorporates better support at intersections with increased detection capability in certain circumstances. It also adds the ability to detect motorcyclists, as well as cyclists and pedestrians.
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist has improved lane recognition and includes detection of certain 3D objects, such as guardrails, which can be used to define lane.
  • Full-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control adds a fourth following distance feature to the three previously available. Enhanced Vehicle Detection makes it possible to detect more than one vehicle ahead, as well as in adjacent lanes. This helps the system deliver smoother, more natural gear adjustments, especially when the driver changes lanes.
  • Like Lane Departure Alert, lane recognition has been improved for Lane Detection Assist. This system now also helps provide more space between vehicles passed in adjacent lanes. It works by compensating for the driving path of vehicles with slight steering adjustments while keeping the vehicle within its lane.
  • An Emergency Braking System has been added to Lane Detection Assist. It is designed to monitor driver actions, such as steering control, to determine if the driver is inattentive or unresponsive, as would be the case during a medical emergency. This feature can bring the vehicle to a stop if the driver does not respond to alerts to take control.
  • Traffic Sign Assist has expanded sign detection capabilities that now include certain intersection and warning signs, such as crosswalks.

Prius Prime: improved comfort

Prius Prime also comes standard with a few additional features made possible by front corner radar sensors and a driver monitor camera. These features include Lane Change Assist, Front Cross Traffic Alert , Park Advance and, a first in the Toyota line, Traffic Jam Assist.

Lane Change Assist works in conjunction with Lane Detection Assist, meaning it works only when DRCC is activated. When a driver partially activates the turn signal, the system's sensors monitor to confirm that there are no vehicles in the path of the lane change and then provide steering support into the new lane with the driver's hands on the wheel.

Front Cross Traffic Alert uses the radar sensors in the front corners to detect vehicles approaching from the side in situations such as when stopped at an intersection. Arrows are displayed to warn the driver, and if the driver attempts to continue in cross traffic, the vehicle provides an audible alert and a warning on the MID display.

The Advanced Parking system performs the steering and brake controls necessary to move the vehicle into a selected parking space. This feature is capable of parallel parking, backing into a perpendicular parking space, and assisting out of a parking space, all hands-free under driver supervision.

Traffic Jam Assist is a first for Toyota and Prius Prime, and can help reduce some of the stress of slow-speed driving with repeated stops and starts in a traffic jam. When driving on a highway with the DRCC and LTA systems activated, if the system's sensors detect slowing traffic and the operating conditions are met, this system will assist by providing hands-free acceleration, braking, and steering control under the active supervision of the driver. . This system is designed to operate only under speeds of approximately 25 miles per hour, and the driver's monitor camera must confirm that the driver has eyes of the road to allow hands-free operation. If the operating conditions are no longer met,
