Maip Group, Eastman's partner for sustainable automotive materials

18 November 2020

Eastman and the Maip Group, a leading international formulator and manufacturer of plastic compounds based in Turin (Italy), have announced a partnership to formulate new sustainable polymer solutions for interior applications in the automotive sector. This will create a unique portfolio of formulations based on Eastman's advanced circular recycling technology, offering a range of bio-based and molecular-based recycled content solutions with Eastman Tritan ™ Renew copolyester and Trēva ™ Renew technology bioplastic .

"This partnership allows us to develop special state-of-the-art plastic formulations for car manufacturers and meet their aggressive targets in terms of sustainable content and substitution of petroleum-based materials," said Eligio Martini , president of Maip Group. "Through Eastman's circular recycling technologies, OEMs will now be able to specify the recycled plastic materials and contents in critical Class A components, such as the color-printed interior finish."

Tritan Renew is based on Eastman's polyester recycling technology and offers up to 50% certified recycled content * from post-consumer and post-industrial waste streams. Unlike mechanically recycled plastics, Tritan Renew offers the same high performance as virgin plastics.

Trēva Renew offers up to 48% organic content from sustainably managed forests and is certified by the USDA's BioPreferred ® program . In addition, Trēva ™ Renew benefits from carbon recovery technology that uses mixed waste plastics by providing an additional certified recycled content of 23% * as an alternative to polycarbonate, ABS and PC-ABS.

"The Maip Group is the right strategic partner to help bring new sustainable polymer formulations to the automotive industry," said Scott Ballard , Eastman Vice President and General Manager of Specialty Plastics. "This is a company with formulation expertise, strong relationships with manufacturers and, most importantly, a deep commitment to sustainability. Together, we look forward to bringing a new level of sustainability to the automotive industry."
