KW V5 Coilover Suspension Kit for Acura NSX and Honda NSX and NSX Type S: Solid Piston Technology for Mid-Engine Hybrid Electric Sports Car

The KW V5 coilover suspension kit is now available for all Honda NSX and NSX Type S (NC, NX) models produced from 2016 to 2022, including the North American Acura NSX models. The V5 allows for a lowering of up to 25 millimeters on the hybrid sports car. Despite the NSX's relatively high weight, the KW V5 coilover suspension kit provides enhanced damping characteristics using KW solid piston dampers. In the late eighties, the Honda NSX legend was born. It marked the dawn of an innovative sports car that was the first production vehicle to feature a self-supporting aluminum body. The 2016 Honda NSX, introduced later, continues the innovative legacy of the Honda NSX models built from 1990 to 2005. In the Honda NSX sports car segment, competing with the Audi R8, Mercedes-AMG GT, and Porsche 911, the Japanese sports car manufactured from 2016 to 2022 became the first hybrid production model with a combination of power sources, utilizing a classic 3.0-liter bi-turbo V6 engine and three electric motors. While the two previous models were relatively lightweight with their curb weights of 1,392 and 1,460 kilograms, the hybrid NSX, equipped with three electric motors and all-wheel drive, has a comparatively higher curb weight (1,772 kilograms) despite incorporating carbon components and fiberglass-reinforced plastic. This weight is nearly 100 kilograms heavier than the all-wheel-drive Porsche 911 Turbo S (991.1; 1,680 kilograms).

Solid Piston Technology for Enhanced Support and Damping Sensitivity with Minimal Suspension Travel

In response to the weight challenge posed by modern sports cars and the resultant high spring rates employed in stock suspension systems, suspension manufacturer KW automotive has developed the four-way adjustable KW V5 coilover suspension for the Honda NSX (NC, NX), including Type S, and Acura NSX. Unlike conventional single- and twin-tube dampers, the suspension manufacturer utilizes its proprietary Solid Piston Technology in damper construction. "In layman's terms, our damper hydraulics can generate significantly greater forces," explains KW Brand Manager Florian Johann. This translates into enhanced support for the entire vehicle structure, eliminating the need for excessively high spring rates. "Our suspension philosophy prioritizes damper hydraulics over the traditional approach of relying solely on suspension springs for chassis support. Additionally, the valves in the V5 damper are separated from the piston, granting us far greater flexibility in the overall suspension design and tuning process."

The KW V5 with its Solid Piston dampers essentially functions as a displacement piston. The piston directly displaces the oil column into the valve housing, where the damper fluid flows through the low-speed needle valves and high-speed shaft valves. Thanks to the adjustable multi-valve technology, the KW V5 coilover suspension effectively dampens road undulations and large cross seams. "Even with minimal suspension travel, we achieve the necessary damping to maintain the safety and drivability of a sports car, even when pushed to its limits," explains Florian Johann from KW Brand Management. Even in the pre-set baseline configuration of the KW V5, the Honda NSX exhibits a surprisingly high level of ride comfort in conjunction with limited suspension travel. This damping technology is derived from developments in prototype motorsport and has been adapted by KW for GT3 customer racing and street suspensions. "From the factory, the NSX already has limited ground clearance and minimal suspension travel, and our suspension reduces ground clearance even further," adds Florian Johann. The installation of the aluminum struts alone lowers the hybrid sports car by ten millimeters. The lowering can then be further adjusted by another 15 millimeters using the adjustable spring perches, making the Honda NSX 25 millimeters lower compared to the stock setup. "Normally, KW is known for manufacturing our struts from stainless steel. However, due to the double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear suspension that do not transfer any wheel-guiding forces to the struts, we produce them from an aerospace aluminum alloy." The pre-set suspension setup allows for tool-free adjustment of both compression and rebound forces separately in the low-speed and high-speed ranges, with 14 clicks each. More information at
