KW expands the delivery program with the first suspension application for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W140): KW V3 Classic Coilover Suspension Kit

14 August 2024

Like every Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the S-Class of the W140 model series launched in 1991 set new standards in the luxury class. In its segment, the luxurious "Mercedes business class" was unchallenged. Decades later, the avant-garde Mercedes-Benz S-Class has become a popular vintage sedan. Responding to the demand for an adjustable coilover suspension kit for the 1991-1998 W140 S-Class, suspension manufacturer KW automotive has developed the KW V3 Classic coilover suspension with continuously variable lowering and dampers with independent compression and rebound adjustment. The parts certificate covers a lowering between 10 and 30 millimeters on the front axle and 15 to 35 millimeters on the drive axle. The lowering is set directly on the supplied spring perches on both axles. The KW V3 Classic suspension with stainless steel dampers is available for models with and without level control on the rear axle for all eight and twelve-cylinder engines. Following the introduction of the KW V3 Classic suspension with stepless lowering for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W126), KW automotive subsequently developed a stainless steel coilover suspension for the W140 S-Class, produced from 1991 to 1998. "Unlike many contemporary Mercedes models, the W140 featured a multilink rear axle and a newly designed double-wishbone front axle without MacPherson struts," explains KW Classic expert Sascha Daucher. "Unlike later models, the W140's front axle utilized separate dampers and coil springs, akin to the R107, W124, W126, and W201. The desired lowering is achieved on both axles by adjusting the KW height settings directly on the coil springs." When ordering the KW V3 Classic coilover suspension for the W140 S-Class, it is crucial to specify whether the vehicle is equipped with optional rear axle level control. KW offers distinct suspension variants to accommodate both configurations.

Proven KW Classic suspension technology for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W140)

KW V3 classic coilover suspension kits have been the preferred choice for classic car enthusiasts seeking optimal suspension performance for years. This is primarily attributed to the KW multi-valve technology. Adjustable low-speed compression and rebound valves are paired with fixed high-speed valves. This configuration allows the sedan to absorb road imperfections remarkably well, even on rough surfaces with numerous joints, while maintaining a sporty driving experience. Another key feature is the independent adjustability of the compression and rebound valves. "Unlike many other suspensions where compression and rebound settings are modified simultaneously, our KW V3 coilovers allow for separate adjustments to both low-speed compression and low-speed rebound," explains KW Classic expert Sascha Daucher. "This enables significantly more precise fine-tuning." The compression stage refers to the hydraulic resistance encountered as the spring compresses in response to road irregularities. This force counteracts spring compression and significantly influences vehicle body roll. A firmer compression setting reduces the valve cross-sectional area, while a more open setting prioritizes ride comfort. The rebound stage, on the other hand, governs vehicle connection to the road as the suspension extends after encountering a bump. It controls body rebound and influences handling characteristics. A closed rebound valve enhances handling precision, while a more open setting improves ride comfort. "KW Classic applications offer a factory-tuned balance of firmness and comfort," explains Sascha Daucher. The KW V3 Classic coilover suspension is available for eight and twelve-cylinder variants of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W140).  More at www.kwsuspensions.net
