CATL delivers batteries to Trailer Dynamics for accelerated electrification of road transport in Europe

1 August 2020

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited and Trailer Dynamics GmbH (Trailer Dynamics) have signed a battery supply contract for a new way of electrifying long-distance trucks. Under the agreement, CATL will develop, manufacture and deliver batteries for the Newton eTrailer, which will be launched in 2023 to promote sustainable road transport development in Europe.

CATL provides Trailer Dynamics with a stable supply of batteries to meet the requirements in Europe with regard to greenhouse gas emissions by reducing diesel consumption and carbon emissions. The Newton eTrailer, Trailer Dynamics' first electric semi-trailer model, responds to the driving behavior of its coupled tractor with integrated electric drives and supports it with an integrated electrical transmission system that intelligently manages the electrical energy resources along the entire route. Both sides use the batteries creatively for the semi-trailer, improving efficiency and also reducing operating costs.

"CATL always offers its customers the most suitable and valuable solution to promote e-mobility," said Li Xiaoning, Executive President of Overseas Commercial Application at CATL. "Trailer Dynamics promotes the electrification of road transport with intelligent and advanced solutions. Together with Trailer Dynamics , the pioneer of truck electrification, we are accelerating the development and spread of e-mobility in Europe. CATL considers this cooperation to be a milestone in the field of emission-free logistics for long-distance trucks, "added Li Xiaoning.

In order to meet the requirements for high efficiency under the complex working conditions for remote trucks, CATL is developing a 300 kWh lithium iron phosphate (lithium iron phosphate / LFP) battery with cell-to-pack (CTP) technology and coolant for the Newton eTrailer . The LFP chemical system is characterized by an exceptionally long cycle life and a high thermal transition temperature of up to 800 ° C. Together with the technology of liquid cooling, it enables the products to perform excellently in terms of safety and reliability as well as a wide range of outside temperatures. By using the advanced CTP technology, the Newton eTrailer also has higher product efficiency and can achieve a system energy density of 155 Wh / kg.

"The collaboration benefits from the leading technological quality and strength of CATL and will appreciate Trailer Dynamics' position as a leader in the field of electrified remote trucks," said Michael Nimtsch, co-founder of Trailer Dynamics.

"A high-quality, high-performance, long-lasting battery is a unique sales incentive that makes the decisive difference to all other competing concepts in the long-haul truck industry," said Abdullah Jaber , CEO of Trailer Dynamics. "CATL, with its extremely high-quality components, was one of ours very easy choice that we just had to make. "

Further discussions about collaboration on future models will be held between CATL and Trailer Dynamics.

Information about Trailer Dynamics

Trailer Dynamics has developed the Newton e-Trailer, an electric drive that replaces one of the trailer's conventional, non-driven axles with an electric axle. In combination with the diesel vehicle, the entire tractor-trailer system is converted into an electrical plug-in hybrid. Together with the adaptive aerodynamics developed by Trailer Dynamics and the intelligent control strategy for the electric auxiliary drive, significant CO2 emissions reductions are achieved and diesel savings of 40% on average.
