Advanced Handling: Three-Way KW V4 Suspension Elevates BMW M5 (G90) to Gran Turismo Special
29 April 2025
KW automotive has developed the KW V4 coilover suspension kit for the seventh-generation BMW M5 (G90). The kit offers independent adjustment of high-speed and low-speed compression damping and low-speed rebound damping. A new valve technology eliminates the need for external reservoirs on the suspension struts. The aluminum suspension provides the BMW M5's plug-in hybrid drive with significantly more precise ride and direct handling. The parts certificate allows for a continuous lowering of 10 to 30 millimeters on both axles of the 727hp BMW M5 Sedan. Development is underway for KW V4 for the BMW M5 Touring and height-adjustable springs, with availability expected soon. Pricing and delivery times can be found on www.kwsuspensions.com/de-en
KW automotive provides coilover suspension kits for all BMW M5 models. Historically, KW coilovers for classic BMW M5 models from the 1980s to the early 2000s typically featured separately adjustable compression and rebound damping (V3), adjustable rebound damping only (V2), or fixed damping (V1). However, the V4 coilovers designed for the F10 and F90 series offer a three-way adjustment. The KW V4 coilover suspension kit is now available for the new BMW M5 (G90). "We are increasingly utilizing our KW V4 coilovers in modern sports car applications, as they offer independent adjustment of high-speed and low-speed compression damping, along with low-speed rebound damping," states KW Brand Manager Florian Johann. "Furthermore, we are expanding the use of our V4 technology in custom OE coilovers for automotive industry clients. Notably, the BMW M4 GTS was among the first production vehicles to feature these dampers as original equipment," he adds.
More Driving Pleasure in the BMW M5
The 727hp BMW M5, available as a plug-in hybrid, feels much more agile with the KW V4 coilover suspension kit despite its high weight of over 2.5 tons. The sedan craves fast corners even more. At the same time, the BMW M5 always remains controllable and track faithful. The bodywork is perfectly supported during all dynamic driving maneuvers. Slight bumps on the highway are precisely damped—even at top speed. The KW V4 coilover suspension also impresses with residual ride comfort on secondary roads thanks to the multi-valve technology. "We use a new valve technology in our current generation of the V4 suspension, which, on the one hand, no longer requires an expansion tank and, on the other hand, offers a significantly extended adjustment range," explains Florian Johann. "As a result, it offers more adjustment options than the suspension developed for the BMW M4 GTS at the time." Thanks to the independently adjustable low-speed and high-speed compression damping and the adjustable low-speed rebound damping, the factory-set performance setting can be changed to a ride comfort-oriented setting at any time. The two compression adjustment wheels on the lower damper housing allow for fine-tuning of the steering response and other parameters such as rolling comfort and tire grip. With 13 clicks available in low-speed and high-speed compression stages, the KW V4 offers a broad tuning window for a customized suspension setup for the BMW M5 (G90).
The rebound forces can be precisely adjusted with 16 clicks for firmer handling or enhanced comfort. Depending on the chosen suspension setting, a few clicks can significantly increase the driving dynamics or ride comfort of the BMW M5. Due to the complex multi-valve technology, the differences are markedly greater than those in conventional electronically adjustable suspensions. A decommissioning kit is also installed when converting to the KW V4 coilover suspension. Apart from the adaptive damper control, all assistance and driving dynamics systems of the BMW M5 remain active.
The lowering is adjusted directly via the dirt-resistant trapezoidal thread on the suspension struts, which are made from a high-strength aluminum alloy. According to the parts certificate, a continuous lowering of 10 to 30 millimeters is possible on both axles. The height-adjustable coilover springs for the BMW M5 Sedan and the KW V4 coilover suspension for the BMW M5 Touring will also be available shortly. More at www.kwsuspensions.com/de-en
