Continental and Google Cloud Announce Partnership to Accelerate Automotive Innovation

5 September 2023

Google Cloud and technology company Continental have announced a strategic partnership aimed at delivering innovative, flexible, and forward-thinking digital solutions for the automotive industry.

This collaboration will leverage Continental's deep knowledge of automotive technology and combine it with Google's data and AI technologies to usher in a new era of safe, efficient, and user-centric automotive solutions. The two companies also have plans to broaden their strategic partnership to encompass additional areas of collaboration in the future, with a shared objective of enhancing in-car connectivity and customer experiences.

One of the initial benefits for consumers will be the integration of Google Cloud's Conversational AI technologies into Continental's Smart Cockpit High-Performance Computer (HPC) solution, which operates on Android Automotive OS (AAOS). This integration will revolutionize automotive voice assistants, allowing passengers to interact with their vehicles using natural language, facilitated by generative AI. These cutting-edge solutions, presented at the IAA MOBILITY 2023 event in Munich, Germany, will provide novel ways for passengers to engage with their vehicles.

Continental's Smart Cockpit HPC offers tailored system performance and a pre-integrated function set, delivering rapid response times and an intuitive user interface. The inclusion of pre-integrated functions for cluster, infotainment, and visual driver assistance can also contribute to cost savings and expedite the introduction of new vehicles and experiences by automakers.

Philipp von Hirschheydt, Continental Executive Board member and head of the Automotive group sector, emphasized the potential of this collaboration: "By working with Google Cloud, we can accelerate our innovation and enhance our solutions for the software-defined vehicle. This collaboration will help our customers to reduce costs, improve efficiency, flexibility, and increase value for all."

Behshad Behzadi, VP Engineering Google Cloud GenAI, highlighted the impact on passenger experiences: "Our partnership with Continental has great potential, and we're very much looking forward to the collaboration. Together with Continental, we will be able to bring our Conversational AI technologies to vehicles, making it easier and faster for automotive companies to leverage Generative AI to create new passenger experiences in cars."

Daniel Holz, VP EMEA North at Google Cloud, expressed excitement about the partnership's potential: "We are excited to partner with Continental. This partnership will enable us to bring our expertise in software, AI, and cloud computing to the automotive industry. Together, we can create a new generation of connected automotive solutions that are not just convenient, but help deliver more safety and better travel experience for passengers."
