Allison Transmission Delivers Propulsion Solution for New MackĀ® Compressed Natural Gas Truck

17 August 2023

Allison Transmission is excited to announce a strategic collaboration with Mack Trucks, a major producer of heavy-duty trucks in North America. The partnership involves the selection of the Allison 4500 Rugged Duty Series™ (RDS) as the exclusive transmission for Mack Trucks' new compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered Granite® model. This partnership showcases Allison's ability to deliver high-performance solutions across diverse applications, regardless of the powertrain's fuel source.

The Allison 4500 RDS fully automatic transmission has been utilized in the Mack Granite diesel model for more than two decades. When Mack Trucks aimed to create a refuse collection vehicle that runs on an alternative fuel, they seamlessly integrated the proven 4500 RDS transmission with a 320-horsepower Cummins L9N engine. This combination resulted in the CNG-powered Mack Granite truck, providing customers with reduced emissions to meet upcoming regulatory standards.

Jonathan Randall, President of Mack Trucks North America, highlighted the achievement: "The CNG Granite model is a prime example of Mack's capability to produce tailored trucks that align with our customers' needs. Our refuse customers expressed interest in a CNG-powered Granite, and through collaborations with Allison and Cummins, we delivered a solution that embodies Mack's reputation for durability, reliability, driver comfort, and now with the added benefits of emissions and noise reduction."

This partnership underscores Allison's dedication to providing a range of propulsion solutions, including conventional, electric hybrid, and fully electric options, to assist customers in their efforts to minimize emissions.

Rohan Barua, Vice President of North America Sales, Global Channel and Aftermarket at Allison Transmission, emphasized the advantages of pairing Allison transmissions with natural gas engines: "Allison transmissions, when paired with natural gas engines, can reduce noise by up to 90% compared to diesel-powered vehicles. The CNG-powered Mack Granite enables customers to enhance fleet productivity, boost fuel efficiency, and reduce noise and emissions. We are proud to collaborate with Mack on this sustainability initiative."
