VW Trucks and Buses and CPFL sign partnership for R&D on electric mobility

28 July 2020

VW Caminhoes e Onibus and CPFL Energia, one of the largest private groups in the electricity sector, have just signed a partnership to boost electric mobility in Brazil. Together, the companies will work on a research and development project, within the scope of ANEEL's R&D Program. The main objective is to create an Electric Mobility laboratory in Indaiatuba (SP), a region where CPFL has one of its operational headquarters. There, a pilot project will be developed that aims to contemplate the electrification of 100% of the operational vehicle fleet and the development of an intelligent vehicle charging system.

"Electromobility is one of the pillars of the TRATON Group, which includes VW Trucks and Buses. That is why we have joined forces to make the production and application of the first electric trucks developed and made in Brazil viable", said Roberto Cortes , President and CEO VW Trucks and Buses.

"The initiative in Indaiatuba encompasses a series of structural projects in the area of innovation at CPFL in the scope of electric mobility. We are working with a long-term view, in order to identify trends and paths for new business in a scenario of market changes", comments Renato Povia , Director of Strategy and Innovation at CPFL.

Povia recalls that the company ended in 2018 the "Emotive" project, one of the most complete assessments of the impacts of electric mobility in Brazil. Over the course of five years, the study proposed a business model for the infrastructure of charging stations for the customer, which would make it possible to expand the number of electroparts (EP) across the country and encourage an increase in the number of electric vehicle (EV) users. .

"By 2024, the company plans to invest more than R $ 96 million in projects to promote electric mobility in Brazil through Research and Development projects promoted by ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency), and the Indaiatuba project in partnership with VW Caminhões e Ônibus is part of this initiative ", concludes Povia.

In addition to providing the e-Delivery electric trucks that will be used in this project, Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus will be responsible for engineering services, such as data collection, driver training, safety guidance, tracking of implementations, support in the development of implements and studies related to the operation of trucks.

The project also has the participation of companies responsible for the development and application of systems that support the operation of CPFL:

  • Siemens: development and application of chargers for vehicles, as well as the intelligent charging system
  • SENAI CIMATEC: development and application of bodies considering 100% electric implements for vehicles, such as aerial basket for maintenance of the electrical network
  • GESEL / UFRJ: academic arm of the project, which will carry out studies on environmental impacts, regulation and incentives, user experience, among others.
