KW Classic Suspension for Porsche 944 inclusive Turbo: Now for all model years available
17 December 2024
In recent years, suspension manufacturer KW Automotive has developed one of the most comprehensive delivery programs for historic Porsche vehicles, complete with parts certificates. The KW V3 Classic suspension kit is now available for the Porsche 944 Turbo and the Porsche 944 (model years 1981 to 1985). When ordering these stainless steel coilover suspension kits with adjustable low-speed compression and rebound damping, it is essential to distinguish between Porsche 944 models manufactured before or after 1985. In addition to the KW V3 Classic and KW V3 Clubsport (model years 1986 to 1991) coilover suspension kits, the optional KW V3 Classic Line is now also available. This version retains the functionality of the KW V3 Classic suspension but features black springs and spring perches for a more classic appearance. More at www.kwsuspensions.net
The KW V3 Classic and V3 Clubsport coilover suspension kits are now available for the Porsche 944 Turbo produced between 1981 and 1985, as well as for all other Porsche 944 models from this era. "Initially, our V3 Classic and V3 Clubsport kits were only offered for the later Porsche 944 and 944 Turbo models produced from 1986 onwards," explains KW Classic expert Sascha Daucher. "Now, we're excited to extend our range to include the earlier models." For transaxle Porsches manufactured between 1981 and 1985, the KW coilover suspensions enable continuous lowering of 10 to 30 millimeters at the front axle and 0 to 20 millimeters at the rear axle. In contrast, models built from 1986 to 1991 offer even greater adjustability, allowing stepless lowering of 25 to 55 millimeters at the front axle and 20 to 45 millimeters at the rear axle, as detailed in the parts certificate. Pre-facelift models feature a torsion bar spring rear axle, where the vehicle's height is adjusted via the torsion bar and axle geometry. For these models, lowering is achieved by adjusting the shock absorber height at the front axle.

For classic car enthusiasts, KW V3 Classic coilovers have been a popular choice since their introduction. Combining adjustable low-speed valves with fixed high-speed valves, the KW V3 Classic coilovers deliver sporty handling without compromising on driving comfort. The separate adjustment of low-speed compression and rebound damping allows for precise fine-tuning, even for the most discerning drivers. The result is a suspension system that seamlessly blends performance and comfort. "Compression damping determines how much the suspension compresses when driving over bumps," explains Sascha Daucher. "It influences how direct and sporty the Porsche 944 feels. A firm compression setting offers precise handling, while a softer setting provides greater comfort. Rebound damping, on the other hand, controls how quickly the vehicle returns to its neutral position after a bump. A stiffer rebound improves handling but can make the ride less comfortable, whereas a softer rebound enhances comfort at the expense of some handling precision." While the stainless-steel KW V3 Classic and KW V3 Clubsport coilovers both feature adjustable low-speed compression and rebound damping, they differ in design details. On racetracks, suspension components experience far greater stress compared to regular driving on public roads. To address this, the KW V3 Clubsport (only available for models from 1986 to 1991) coilover is explicitly engineered to achieve faster lap times on tracks when paired with semi-slick tires on a road-legal car. This design ensures the Porsche 944 Turbo remains safe and easy to control, even on demanding circuits like the Nürburgring Nordschleife. In comparison, a Porsche 944 Turbo equipped with KW V3 Classic coilovers offers a slightly more comfortable ride, making it the ideal choice for drivers who do not frequently participate in track days. Both suspension systems allow precise adjustments, with 12 clicks for low-speed compression and 16 clicks for low-speed rebound. For an additional charge, the KW V3 Classic coilover can be ordered with black springs and spring plates as part of the KW Classic Line. The KW V3 also includes top mounts, enhancing its functionality and appeal for Porsche 944 drivers. More at www.kwsuspensions.net
