Bosch to decide on battery cell production by year-end

German auto supplier Robert Bosch plans to decide by the end of the year or early next year whether it will start producing battery cells for electric cars, chief executive Volkmar Denner told Welt am Sonntag.

Bosch will only decide in favour of making battery cells if it manages to develop a new approach in working with cell chemistry to stand out from the major Asian cell suppliers, the CEO was quoted as saying.

Secondly, Bosch wants to be able to produce the batteries in existing facilities to avoid having to create a new infrastructure, according to the weekly newspaper.

"Our researchers and developers are working intensively at the moment to make both things happen," Denner said.

Bosch and Daimler which teamed up earlier this year to develop self-driving taxes will probably by 2023 be able to put a "robo-taxi" on the road, the CEO said.

Denner declined to comment on an investigation by European Union antitrust regulators into allegations of a cartel among a group of German carmakers.
