Ferrari or Fiat 500 – everyone knows the cost to insure these cars will be as different as their performance – but few are aware that choosing a car with new auto-emergency-braking technology can cut the cost of insurance, year after year, according to a survey of 1,000 quotes carried out for Thatcham Research.
500 insurance quotes were secured for five pairs of cars – each the same, but one with autonomous emergency braking (AEB), the other without – across a range of people, ages, places and insurers. On average, the cost of insuring a car with AEB is nearly £80 cheaper – and there are huge savings to be made for young drivers who shop around.
“This is because insurers see an 18 per cent reduction in third party injury claims for AEB-fitted cars,” says Thatcham Research Group Rating Manager, Howard Barron. “Plus, if the technology in the car prevents you having a bump, shunt or crash, your no-claims discount remains intact … along with your car.”
They point out that event different model types within a series can have the AEB and get cheaper insurance which more than offsets the higher cost of the better equipped version.
